Understanding Myofascial Pain
What is It & How It Typically Presents
Myofascial pain is a common form of musculoskeletal discomfort that originates from the muscles and the fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles throughout the body. Unlike joint-related pain, myofascial pain is typically driven by soft tissue dysfunction, often presenting as tightness, tenderness, and restricted movement.
What Is Fascia and Why It Matters
Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that envelops muscles, tendons, and other structures, helping to transmit force and maintain structural integrity. When healthy, fascia is flexible and allows smooth, coordinated movement.
However, when fascia becomes restricted or irritated, it can:
- Limit normal muscle function
- Reduce mobility and flexibility
- Increase tension and sensitivity in surrounding tissues
- Contribute to pain both locally and in other areas of the body
